Fern-A. Japanese Painted (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum) is a beautiful deciduous fern known for its striking hand-painted appearance. The arching grey-green fronds of Japanese Painted Fern are highlighted with silver, giving them a metallic sheen, and often feature a burgundy flush in the center that matches the stems.

This fern produces its best frond color in part shade and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Fern-A. Japanese Painted (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum) is also deer resistant, making it a reliable choice for shade gardens and woodland borders.

Note: Deciduous ferns may remain dormant until late spring. During dormancy, the plant may appear as a pot of soil upon delivery, but a healthy, robust Fern-A. Japanese Painted Fern is waiting to emerge.
