Baptisia American Goldfinch
Baptisia American Goldfinch is a dense, upright perennial native plant with attractive blue-green foliage. From late spring into summer, it produces profuse golden-yellow blooms that cover the foot-long racemes rising above the foliage mound. After flowering, the blooms give way to large seedpods that turn black when ripe, adding ornamental interest even after bloom time.
Baptisia American Goldfinch performs best in full sun and thrives in dry to average, well-drained acidic soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant and low-maintenance.
Baptisias are excellent butterfly host plants, supporting species such as Frosted Elfin, Eastern Tailed Blue, Wild Indigo Duskywing, Clouded Sulfur, and Orange Sulfur butterflies. The foliage is mildly toxic to mammals if ingested, so it should be planted with care around pets and livestock.
