Baptisia Australis
Baptisia australis (Blue False Indigo) is a strong, upright perennial native plant known for its attractive blue-green foliage and long-lived garden presence. In late spring to early summer, it produces striking spikes of deep indigo-blue, pea-like flowers that rise above the foliage in tall, showy racemes. After blooming, it develops ornamental charcoal-black seed pods that add continued visual interest well into the summer and fall.
Baptisia australis performs best in full sun and thrives in dry to average, well-drained soils. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant, long-lived, and very low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for naturalized and native plantings.
Baptisias are valuable pollinator plants, attracting bees and butterflies while also serving as host plants for several butterfly species. The plant is mildly toxic if ingested, so care should be taken when planting around pets or livestock.
