Cleyera japonica
Cleyera japonica (Ternstroemia gymnanthera) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with high branches and a rounded crown. Cleyera japonica produces new growth that emerges bronze and matures to leathery dark green leaves with a paler underside. In late spring, Cleyera japonica produces fragrant, downward-facing clusters of white flowers followed by shiny black fruit. This adaptable shrub prefers part sun and moist, well-drained soil and becomes drought tolerant once established. Cleyera japonica is very similar to, and often sold as, Ternstroemia gymnanthera, making it a versatile choice for hedges, foundation plantings, and mixed borders.
