Southern Shield Fern

Dryopteris ludoviciana

Southern Shield Fern is a semi-evergreen to evergreen native fern with an upright vase-like habit.  The glossy but leathery triangular dark green fronds grow as long as 2 feet.  Thrives in rich, moist, acidic soils with some shade.  Tolerates drought once established.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS: Low Maintenance. Protect from winds.  no serious disease or pest issues.

LANDSCAPE USES:  Accents or Group Plantings, Borders, Woodland Garden, Rock Gardens, Native Gardens, Naturalized Areas, Pond Edges, and Containers.

COMPANION PLANTS:  Coral Bells, Bleeding Heart, Lungwort
